Google plans to bring ads in AI Mode to the UK in Q4 2026

Google's 28 October 2026 post names Brazil, Mexico and the UK as planned fourth-quarter markets for ads in AI Mode.

Information correct as of 2 November 2026. Alphabet reports in US dollars, and the figures here are not converted.

Google plans to start showing ads inside AI Mode answers in the UK before the end of 2026. It has not said when in the quarter the ads arrive, and it has published no evidence of how they convert. If you run Search campaigns, two settings decide which AI Mode questions your ads are eligible for: AI Max, Google’s set of automated Search features, and broad match. Check both before the launch.

On 28 October 2026, Shashi Thakur, VP and GM for Google Search Ads and Ads on Google Experiences, said Google is now scaling ads in AI Mode in 10 countries. They are Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore. In the fourth quarter of 2026, Google plans “to expand to additional locales, including Brazil, Mexico, and the United Kingdom”. Multiturn ads, which appear on answers to follow-up questions, are launching in the US. Google’s help page adds that existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns are eligible automatically, with no new campaign or separate budget, and that ads in AI Mode cannot be switched off separately from Search.

Google announced the expansion on the day Alphabet reported a second quarter of slowing Search growth, and its chief business officer named AI Mode’s lower monetisation as one cause. He presented wider ad coverage, including new countries, as Google’s response, and the UK is one of the countries named for the fourth quarter. Existing campaigns will compete for the new slots, and Google’s reports fold AI Mode results into ordinary Search figures. The only performance claim in Google’s announcement is that click-through rates for sponsored and organic product listings are similar. It rests on two weeks of US data and gives no numbers. Treat AI Mode as an unproven placement, and decide now how far each campaign should reach into it.

When will ads in AI Mode launch in the UK?

Google has not given a date. Its 28 October post places the UK in a group planned for the fourth quarter of 2026, which ends on 31 December. Google describes this as a plan, and it names Brazil, Mexico and the UK as examples, so other markets may join them in the same quarter.

Google’s help page on ads in AI-powered experiences lists the countries where ads can run inside AI Overviews and AI Mode: the US and the 10 markets above, plus Indonesia for AI Overviews only. The UK is not on the list, although Google says the list may not be exhaustive. UK businesses whose campaigns target listed markets, such as the US, Canada or Australia, can already be eligible for AI Mode ads there. Within the UK, ads can appear above or below AI Overviews, as they can in every market where AI Overviews run. AI Mode itself has been rolling out to UK searchers since 28 July 2025.

The UK has waited longer than several other English-speaking markets. Ads inside AI Overviews reached Australia, Canada, New Zealand and eight other countries on 19 December 2025, PPC Land reported, and the UK was not among them. Google’s post gives no reason for the UK timing. It also mentions AI Mode only, so it is not clear whether ads inside UK AI Overviews will arrive at the same time.

When they do arrive, UK ads in AI Mode will carry a Sponsored label. The help page says text ads and Shopping ads can appear, and that Google is experimenting with local inventory ads and vehicle ads. Multiturn ads are launching in the US, and Google has not said whether UK ads will appear on follow-up questions.

Alphabet’s Q3 call named AI Mode as one drag on Search growth

Alphabet’s third-quarter results, released on 28 October, show Google Search & other revenue up 12% year on year to $63.35 billion. Growth was 17% in the second quarter and 19% in the first, Search Engine Journal reported, and revenue barely moved from the second quarter’s $63.27 billion.

On the call, J.P. Morgan analyst Doug Anmuth asked why Search revenue grew more slowly than queries, which Sundar Pichai had said were growing at their fastest rate in five years. Philipp Schindler, Google’s chief business officer, put currency first and called it the biggest single cause of the slowdown from the second quarter. He then pointed to some Asia-Pacific retail advertisers hit by the EU’s removal of its de minimis exemption, and to media and entertainment spending settling after a World Cup quarter.

AI Mode came last. Schindler said its fast query growth “had an impact because of the lower monetization we were seeing in AI Mode”, according to Alphabet’s transcript of the call. He did not say what AI Mode’s monetisation is lower than, or how much it cost Search revenue. Monetisation measures Google’s revenue from those queries, so it says nothing direct about the return an advertiser gets. He added that Google feels very good about its trajectory and that its ad tests had been promising. Google is now scaling ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode to more users and queries, he said, including new countries and US follow-up questions.

Pichai set out Google’s order of priorities in his prepared remarks: as with the shift to mobile, Google builds the best Search experience first and monetises second. Schindler said many AI Mode queries are upper-funnel, and that most are incremental. Upper-funnel questions sit further from a purchase, which matters for UK accounts bidding to a CPA or ROAS target.

Pichai’s remarks this quarter did not repeat his July claim that Google sends billions of clicks a week to websites through AI features in Search. Our guide to clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode covers what UK sites can measure for themselves.

Match types decide how far a campaign reaches into AI Mode

Google matches ads in AI Mode in two ways, according to its help page. A query with clear commercial intent, such as a search for pool vacuum cleaners, is matched directly, as on a results page. A longer, exploratory question is matched against the query and the AI answer together, so the intent can come from the answer. Google’s example is someone asking why their pool is green: the answer covers cleaning, and ads for pool vacuums can follow.

Which of those routes a campaign can use depends on its targeting.

No campaign can opt out of AI Mode separately from Search, and none can target it on its own, according to Google’s help page. Negative keywords, brand exclusions and asset pinning still apply, although AI Max’s Final URL expansion and URL inclusions can stop pinned assets being used.

Some UK accounts may already be set up for exploratory matching without anyone choosing it. Google said in April that, from September 2026, campaigns using automatically created assets would move to AI Max with search term matching and text customisation switched on. Campaigns using the campaign-level broad match setting would move with search term matching on. Google expected those upgrades to finish by the end of September. Dynamic Search Ads campaigns follow from February 2027, with all three AI Max features on.

The results will be hard to separate. Google’s help page says AI Mode impressions, clicks, conversions and cost are included in aggregate in standard campaign reports and the search terms report. It describes no separate AI Mode view. Some placements also add an AI explainer, a short text Gemini writes from the query, the answer and public sources including your website. Advertisers cannot write, edit, approve or opt out of it.

Google has published no conversion data for AI Mode ads

Google’s case for the format rests on clicks. Its post says click-through rates are already similar for sponsored and organic product listings in AI Mode, based on internal US data from 20 August to 3 September 2026. Barry Schwartz of Search Engine Roundtable questioned whether that holds for text links, since product results are so visual. Neither the post nor the help page gives any conversion figures.

SE Ranking’s study measures how often the ads appear. It checked 50,032 US commercial keywords on 30 June 2026 and found text ads in AI Mode on 29.45% of them. Keywords with an estimated cost per click of $10 or more in SE Ranking’s own keyword data drew far more ads: 53.56% showed one, against 24.33% of those under $2. Answers that carried ads showed one or two, and 71.1% showed two.

If UK results follow that US pattern, high-cost sectors will meet the placement most often, and the ad blocks seen so far have held only one or two advertisers. Until someone publishes conversion data, each account’s own figures are the best guide, even though they cannot isolate AI Mode.

What should UK marketing teams do next?

Most of this fits into one account review. Aim to finish it before Black Friday on 27 November, because a new placement that arrives during peak trading will be hard to read.

  1. Find the campaigns already on AI Max. Check every Search campaign’s settings for AI Max, starting with any that used automatically created assets or the campaign-level broad match setting before September. Google said it would notify accounts before upgrading them. Search term matching can be switched off for each ad group, but broad match keywords keep a campaign eligible for exploratory questions either way.
  2. Test before you commit to exploratory matching. Exact and phrase match reach AI Mode only on clearly commercial queries. Broad match, AI Max, Shopping and Performance Max also reach exploratory questions. Where a campaign runs to a tight CPA or ROAS target, test AI Max with one of Google’s one-click campaign experiments before leaving it on. Moving broad match and AI Max into their own campaign is another option, though its results still mix AI Mode with ordinary Search.
  3. Record a baseline and agree a threshold. Note weekly CPA or ROAS, conversion rate and the share of long, question-style search terms for each campaign now. When ads reach UK AI Mode, mark the date and compare with the same weeks last year as well as the weeks before. This tracks overall campaign performance only: Google’s reports do not show AI Mode separately, and peak-season promotions, conversion lag and other changes move the same numbers. Agree with clients in advance what change would prompt a rethink.
  4. Read the search terms report for conversational queries. Google says AI Mode queries are on average three times longer than traditional searches. In AI Max campaigns, the AI Max match type and the source column show which terms came from broad match expansion or keywordless matching. Neither those columns nor query length shows which clicks came from AI Mode. They do show where spend is going, so add negatives where terms spend without converting.
  5. Check the controls you lose in regulated sectors. Advertisers cannot edit or opt out of AI explainers. Google says pinned responsive search ad assets are not used when Final URL expansion picks a more relevant landing page, or when URL inclusions are on. Its AI Max setup guide says to turn both off to keep pinned assets showing, so check them wherever pinning keeps required wording in place, such as a risk warning. In December 2025, PPC Land reported that Google’s AI Overviews help page excluded sensitive categories, including finance, healthcare, gambling and alcohol, from ads inside AI Overviews. Google’s current page, which covers AI Overviews and AI Mode together, names no such categories and says only that all Google Ads policies apply, so check how your category is treated before the launch.
  6. Bring Merchant Center feeds up to date. Shopping ads can appear in AI Mode, and Google’s guidance asks for descriptive titles and descriptions, several high-resolution images, accurate prices, and clear shipping and returns details.

What to watch next

Google’s help page is the likeliest place to see the UK launch confirmed. PPC Land reported that when ads inside AI Overviews reached 11 more countries in December 2025, advertisers found out from an edit to the help page. Google made no announcement. Watch the country list for a UK entry, and check whether it covers AI Mode, AI Overviews or both. Google says the list may not be exhaustive, so a missing entry proves nothing.

Google has not said whether the UK launch includes multiturn ads or the AI Mode formats it showed at Google Marketing Live in May, such as Conversational Discovery ads and Highlighted Answers. Reporting matters more to agencies. Google’s help page describes only aggregate reporting today, and a separate AI Mode view would change how UK accounts judge the placement.

From February 2027, Dynamic Search Ads campaigns start moving to AI Max with all three features on, which will make more UK campaigns eligible for exploratory matching. Alphabet’s fourth-quarter results, expected early in 2027, are the next chance to hear whether Schindler still counts AI Mode as a drag on Search growth once more countries carry ads. Anat Ashkenazi, Alphabet’s CFO, has already said she expects a slightly larger currency headwind in that quarter.

The real lesson from Google’s AI Mode ads expansion

By Schindler’s account, AI Mode’s fast query growth comes with lower monetisation, and more ad slots in more countries is Google’s response, with the UK among the next markets. Its settings decide how far a UK account can be drawn in. Accounts that used automatically created assets or the campaign-level broad match setting were due to move onto AI Max search term matching in September. If that setting is still on, they will be eligible for exploratory questions in AI Mode from the day UK ads go live. Review those settings before the launch, which Google has not dated.

Frequently asked questions

Will ads in AI Mode cost more than standard Google Search ads?

Google says ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode use the same auction and the same cost-per-click or conversion-based bidding as standard Search ads, with no extra charge to take part. What a click costs still depends on the auction for that query.

Does advertising in AI Mode help a brand get cited in AI Mode answers?

No. Google says buying ads does not influence its organic AI answers, and whether a site is cited does not affect its ad eligibility. In SE Ranking's US study, only 11.53% of advertiser domains appeared among the cited sources for the keywords they advertised on.
